Superb

The Abu Garcia Revo SX Rocket baitcasting reel is a speed demon, and is a great option if you're looking for a seriously fast retrieval as well as smoothness and strength. A great reel for working more active lures such as frogs or other topwaters.

Summarized feedback from Bass Anglers

Reasons to buy

  • Immense retrieval speed allows you to pick up slack efficiently and to pull fish out of heavy cover quickly
  • A great option for working frogs and other reaction-type baits where you work the bait primarily with your rod tip
  • Seriously powerful drag. Really good heavy cover scenario reel
  • X2-Craftic alloy frame and sideplate gives this reel a lightweight design
  • Easy to adjust magnetic braking system
  • DuraGear brass gears are highly regarded and consistent
  • Having a fast gear ratio is key for getting a good hook set on fish that swim towards you after the initial hook up
  • Overall smooth retrieval and impressive casting
  • Works comfortably in both freshwater and saltwater (fishing in saltwater will always require a wash afterwards)

Reasons not to buy

  • Some complaints of the side palm plate falling off
  • Some users have found it tricky to get the brakes dialed in correctly

Love this reel for fishing a jerkbait. The fast gear ratio allows you to pick up slack super quickly. Other than that, the reel is solid. Smooth with a very strong drag. Does the job I need it to very well!

Gear ratio of this reel is super fast and it has become my go-to pitching baitcaster as a result. Probably getting another 150 pitches a day in thanks to the retrieval speed.

Bottom Line

Overall, the SX Rocket's main focus is to give anglers an insanely fast, smooth retrieval, as well as the ability to get those fish out of the danger zones quickly once hooked. We highly recommend this reel if you're looking to fish more active lures, such as topwater poppers and frogs. There aren't a huge amount of reviews on this reel, but from what we've seen, feedback overall is mostly positive, with the exception of some anglers having some challenges dialing in the brakes to their liking.

There are a few things to consider when it comes to this reel's gear ratio as it does limit its suitability to specific use-cases. A reel with a ratio of 9.0:1 is only really suitable to techniques where you work the lure primarily with your rod tip as it will enable you to quickly pick up slack when you get a bite. The Revo SX Rocket is therefore a great option for techniques like topwater frogging, pitching/flipping and jerkbaits. However, it is definitely not something you want to use for more straight retrieve techniques like deep crankbaits or slow rolling spinnerbaits as it will cause you to pull your bait out of the strike zone far too quickly.

If you are looking for something more versatile, check out the Revo SX.
